Training for the Elderly
Benefits Of Exercise For The Elderly
A recent study showed that frail health in elderly people associated
with aging is largely due to physical inactivity, but it’s never too
late to enjoy the benefits of exercise. The benefits of exercise for the
elderly include preventing or delaying chronic disease such as heart
disease, diabetes, high blood pressure in addition to reducing the risk
of colon cancer and improving the quality of life for people with
arthritis and lung disease.
Older people often fall into the trap of thinking that aging
automatically means inactivity or they believe that healthy eating is
more important than exercise. This couldn’t be further from the truth.
Merely walking or riding regularly at a moderate intensity can improve
the health and fitness of the elderly remarkably. Monitored resistance
training can also improve the quality of life for elderly by
strengthening muscles, bones, joints and co-ordination. This also
reduces the risk of injury from falling.
Regular exercise also increases the strength of the immune system,
helping to fight of infections and keep the body healthy.
In short, exercise is absolutely beneficial for people of all ages,
but particularly the elderly as their bones, muscles and joints are
naturally beginning to decline in strength in addition to weakening in
the heart and lungs. Regular exercise will help to reduce this.
